Bacteria can spread even in the cleanest places. Surgeons (外科醫(yī)生) wash their hands and wear gloves before they work, but any bacteria they pick up after that can spread to their patients. Tatiana Ortiz’s research could one day help prevent some hospital infections. The 15-year-old presented her results at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, an annual competition for students worldwide to show off their science projects. And by doing this research to help others, Tatiana conquered her own fear of bacteria.
Tatiana suffers from asthma — a disease that can make it hard for her to breathe. Breathing becomes especially tough when she gets an infection. It made her truly fear bacteria. To fight her fears, her parents encouraged her to study bacteria for her science projects. And she did.
Working in a local hospital’s lab with a microbiologist, the teen grew bacteria groups. She got them from a surgical bed handle, something that doctors or nurses might touch often during surgery.
Tatiana then got 32 surgical gloves, which she divided into four groups. Each group got a different treatment. She coated one set with Sharklet-film, a film that prevents bacteria from attaching. She treated another eight with Sani-Shield, a spray (噴霧) that also stops bacteria from sticking. She used a bacteria-killing cleaning product on eight more. She applied colloidal silver, known for its bacteria-killing functions, to the last eight.
The most effective treatments were the Sharklet-film and the Sani-Shield spray. They reduced the number of bacteria by 44 percent. The bacteria killers were less effective. They may simply need a longer contact (接觸) time with the bacteria, Tatiana suspects. The teen hopes that adding a coating to the gloves to prevent bacteria from sticking will decrease infections in hospitals. First, she needs to make the gloves and test them — her next research goal. But as she studied bacteria, Tatiana found she got rid of her fear of bacteria. Now when it comes to bacteria, she says, “I can defeat the enemy!”

UNESCO published its Human Development Report, which makes Norway a model of health for the rest world. The report looks at many points, including life expectancy and average number of years spent in school. Norway ranked number one in their data.
Since Norway is setting a good example for how to live, we thought now would be a good time to take a look at how Norwegians eat. Here’s what you should know:
The Norwegian breakfast doesn’t look anything like a traditional American breakfast. Breakfast is a light thing. There’s also often meat and fish. And coffee is a must. Heavy egg dishes are not the typical pattern here. In Norway, brown cheese like no other, is beloved for its uniqueness. It’s often eaten on open-faced sandwiches.
The cuisine is shaped by the need to preserve. Norway is not only surrounded by the sea, but its climate is such that it demands preservation. The short growing season and cold weather in Norway make it a necessity for survival.
Norwegian fish and seafood are unparalleled (優(yōu)秀的). And that’s one of the reasons that, smoked, dried, and even sometimes just fresh fish, are so popular in Norway. They eat fish for breakfast, as we mentioned above. They serve it for lunch on open-faced sandwiches.
Their cold, wet climate means they get some of the sweetest berries around. The most prized is the cloudberry. The cloudberry only grows in the wild, and picking locations are guarded like family secrets. They’re often served simply, or made into jams to preserve them for the many months when cloudberries aren’t in season.
The Norwegians’ love of cake is strong. Norwegians are praised for creating the world’s best cake, after all. Looks like even the healthiest nation has a sweet tooth.
12. What did the report say about Norway?
A. It held reliable data on people’s health.
B. It set an example for schools worldwide.
C. It topped the list as the healthiest country.
D. It met its expectations for people’s life expectancy.
13. What do Norwegians usually have for breakfast?
A. Sandwiches without cheese.
B. Coffee and light food.
C. Heavy egg dishes.
D. Fresh fish.
14. What is a characteristic of Norwegian foods?
A. They are diverse due to the long growing season.
B. They go bad easily due to its warm weather.
C. They mainly come from farmland.
D. They need to be preserved.
15. How is the seafood culture of Norway?
A. Primitive. B. Simple.
C. Strong. D. Alien.

Reflecting on daily life, we seldom notice change. 16 It’s like what happened in childhood. You got taller, but you didn’t notice that until you stood up against the wall with the marks. You are constantly changing. The only problem is your changing direction. 17
Be patient whatever you are going through. Change will happen and it happens in its own time. I suffered a lot in building my own business. I made mistakes and failed many times before I finally succeeded. It was a big lesson in patience. 18 No matter what your desired life is, there will always be dark times.
Forgetting will do you good. 19 It’s hard to realize that the one hurting you with them is yourself, because you are the director of your mind. You are the one who keeps recalling the painful past over and over again. That’s why it’s absolutely necessary to forget all those memories. Once you see that the only one suffering is you, you will let go.
There will always be problems in life. Most people expect life to change rapidly, but they don’t realize what their real dreams are. All they want is a problem-free future. Once they decide to work for it, they expect success to come instantly. 20 Even if they are lucky enough, other problems will set in. It’s not right to ignore them. Instead, we should do our best to overcome them and see where life takes us.
A. It is possible but in most cases it won’t happen.
B. We all have memories and many are painful ones.
C. It happens in secret until it is impossible to ignore.
D. The past keeps bothering those who refuse to let the pain go.
E. So remember that it will take time before good things happen.
F. Below are things to remember in order to change for the better.
G. Here are three most important steps I’ve taken to change my life.

Get Ready to Take Notes (Before Class)
Review your notes from the previous class session before you come to class. This will help you remember what was covered and get you ready to understand new information your teacher provides.
Complete all assigned readings before you come to class. Your teacher will expect that you have done this and will use and build upon this information.

Keep your attention focused on what your teacher is saying. Listen for "signal statements" that tell you what your teacher is about to say is important to write in your notes. Examples of signal statements are "The most important point..." and "Remember that..." Be sure to include in your notes information that your teacher repeats or writes on the chalkboard.
Write quickly so that you can include all the important information in your notes. Do this by writing abbreviated words such as med for medicine, using symbols such as % for percent, and writing short sentences.
